As an Animal Control Officer or Animal Welfare Officer, you will need to pick up dogs for several reasons. Confinement laws state that any unsecured dog (off-leash, no tether, outside the fence and home) must be secured. Dogs will also need to be rescued if they become injured or diseased. Lastly, dogs will need to be captured if they are presenting with aggression to the general public by charging, growling, and trying to attack people or other animals.

After some bad weather passed I was able to set a trap and then got a call a few hours later that we got the first one. In this video I show how to safely secure and remove a dog from a trap. A couple big things to notice here is how I position the pole while lowering the cage so I can maintain control of the pole without pinning the dog to the bottom of the cage while I do it, and how I position myself on the other side of the cage door so when the dog is pulled out if she decided to lunge and bite she would be biting at the cage door before my leg. I was able to get one puppy which I thought based on behavior was just feral. After a day I came back to it at the shelter and saw it had calmed down significantly and was still very shy and scared but not trying to bite anymore. On day 2 I went back and got a second pup but I had to jump out of the truck and sprint over to get it before it escaped so I wasn’t able to get that part on video. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for two dogs fighting in a backyard. Upon arrival the owner was reportedly out of town and the dogs had gotten outside. The bigger two had clearly been fighting with the smaller one taking the bulk of the damage. With 4 dogs in total I prioritized catching the largest one, the aggressor, first. As soon as I got him on the pole the smaller dog that he had been attacking took the opportunity to get some revenge. I ended up striking the dog several times with my boot and a stick after that didn’t work. We do carry batons that we are authorized to use for situations like this though an injury from a baton strike is significantly worse than all of the strikes he got combined. Ultimately all 4 dogs were caught and all injuries proved to be just superficial. The 2 I brought back were treated for smoke inhalation as they were the closest to the fire. There was a lot of chasing in the woods that I cut from this one because it wasn’t very interesting but I did find the homeless owners in the woods. They agreed to keep the dogs tied up going forward and I haven’t seen another call come in for them since. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for a cruelty complaint that a dog was “skin and bones”. I didn’t realize when I first showed up but I have seen this dog before in my video from 11/26. I made contact with the owner this time and learned the dog’s name is “Chico”. I was able to point out where the dog was climbing over the fence and the owner stated he would be getting a tether since he’s able to get over the fence. #animalwelfare #animalrescue #dog

@animalwelfareguy Call came in for a dog owner going to jail. The dog was trapped in the truck when I got there, but when it was unconfined it charged the PD officer on scene and got pepper sprayed. Given that info I can’t really blame the dog for showing signs of aggression, but after being removed from the scene she really did calm down a lot. Giving her a decon bath was a little tricky as she started spooling back up, but she’s safe and not in pain now. @animalwelfareguy No call for this one. I was pulled over doing notes from a cruelty case when I saw this sweet baby walking in the street. Several people agreed that the dog was a stray and the people at the house I followed her back to had been putting food out for the dog for a while. After discussing options for the dog they decided to officially claim the dog as theirs and provide care for her (food/water/shelter). Now she doesn’t have to stay outside anymore and has a family that loves her. Sometimes people don’t suck. #animalwelfare #animalrescue #dog

@animalwelfareguy Call came in for an animal cruelty complaint. The caller stated that residents at the reported address were starving their puppy to the point of being just skin and bones. When I got there the residents had a different story. This wasn’t their puppy, they had picked it up off the street when they saw it severely emaciated. They stated they had the pup for a couple of weeks and it had been putting on weight but that they had no interest in keeping her. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for a confined stray pup. When I got there it was a little less than confined as half their fence line was on the ground and the pup was extremely avoidant. It showed no interest in treats or food even when I left and viewed from a distance so trapping was not an option. I had to use the pole because anytime I got closer than about 10 feet from the pup it started raising its lip and growling. The dog calmed down a little at the shelter and was able to be moved on a leash but it was extremely shut down. #animalwelfare #animalrescue #dog

When I first got on scene thy were outside and slipped back under the fence. We have a history of reports for these dogs getting loose and attacking other dogs and people. I initially put him on a pole as a precaution due to the mention of aggressive behavior and caught him while he was asleep. After about 0.1 second I decided that wasn’t necessary. I walked up slow initially but after getting too close she started charging and repeatedly tried to bite me. I was able to safely get her on the pole and onto the truck without incident. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for an aggressive tan pit chasing people. She ran up on me as soon as I was within ear shot. I wasn’t able to catch her at that time because she hopped back over the fence. After speaking to the alleged owner, she stated that the dog wasn’t hers but that it hops into her yard to play with her dogs. The resident stated she would be comfortable with trapping the dog for me because it currently had too much room to run around. The dog did fight a lot on the pole but was totally different after I loaded her up onto the truck. Once at the shelter I noticed there was a circumferential scar on her neck. @animalwelfareguy Someone decided to hit this dog in the shelter lobby when they brought it in. One of the front desk workers came and got me after they saw a man hitting this sweet baby in the face. When I got to the front of the shelter he was already walking outside but I was able to stop him and get his ID. When I asked him why he decided to hit the dog he said “because it wouldn’t sit still”. In the video I’m positioning the dog so I could get clear pictures of it from every side for cruelty charges. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for two dogs fighting in the street. The stray dog had jumped the fence to get to the calling party’s dog. From there both dogs ran out to the street and managed to get wedged under a car. It was 103° out and given much longer both dogs would have passed from heat stroke. Luckily I was able (with help from the calling party) to get both dogs out from under the car before any serious damage had occurred. Neither dog had any serious injuries! I had to hoist her out because she was showing defensive aggression when approached in the dumpster but with a quick hoist she was out without any lasting pain. Interestingly after getting out she was very sweet with me but continued to show aggression towards females. Multiple calls come in for a severely ill dog in the area and today he decided (after running for about 10 seconds) that he would come over and actually let me get close. He had a large lump on his throat but it didn’t seem to be causing him any pain. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for a dog that was actively charging some cable workers in the area. Upon arrival the dog was laying on the front porch of a nearby home. After speaking to the resident she told me the dog wasn’t hers but she has been feeding it for a year so it’s comfortable with her. The dog was very avoidant with me so l had the resident put a leash on it and pass it to me which you can see at the beginning of the video. While moving towards the truck the dog was spinning and biting the pole. This can become dangerous for the dog very quickly because the cord in the pole does not spin freely with the movement of the dog, so the cord ends up wrapping around tighter, choking the dog in the process. That is why you see me rotating the pole as I move. Despite how bad it looks he really was fine and fully caught his breath about 5 seconds after the video ends. Once at the shelter he actually calmed down enough to let me carry him through the building and walked into a kennel on his own without any signs of aggression. #animalwelfare #animalrescue #dog

Upon arrival we thought the two dogs were confined to the property but they were able to slip out of a gap in the back of the fence. I chased them for about 1/4 to 1/2 a mile while another officer prepared the shots for the tranquilizer. I wasn’t able to catch the bite dog today or the male Pyrenees but I was able to catch the very sweet female. The residents also had a LOT of roosters. The brown one only had a little defensive aggression and once at the shelter allowed pets and being carried albeit still on the pole. The black one never showed any aggression at all. You can see the cop’s taser dot honed in on the black dog through most of the video. While he never showed any aggression I was actively going for the brown one which made the black one a bigger risk. I did tell the officer several times that he didn’t need to stay posted up like that- I appreciate him having my back but I also don’t like a taser being pointed right over my shoulder. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for a loose pug with a broken leg. I found two upon arrival and impounded both before attempting to make contact with the owner as they were unconfined. The owner agreed to keep them inside and proceeded to show me the vet bills and leftover medication that he had been given when he took the dog with the injured leg in. When he followed up with the vet they told him that looked normal and that it should improve over time on its own. I returned the dogs to him with a terms and conditions sheet for providing proper vet care. Not all vets provide the same level of service unfortunately. #animalwelfare #animalrescue #dog

@animalwelfareguy Call came in for an underage bite victim. Upon arrival after speaking with PD officers, EMTs, and the owners they all confirmed that the owner’s two dogs were fighting and their daughter was bit trying to separate them. The owner signed this sweet girl over due to behavior. Normally under these circumstances the dog would be euthanized after the rabies quarantine period but this one will likely be transferred to a rescue because the bite was provoked and she is super sweet. #animalwelfare #dog #dogrescue

@animalwelfareguy Several calling parties reported this dog chasing people down the street. I don’t know about him chasing anybody (maybe cars) but he seemed pretty scared. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for a dog in the middle of a busy street laying down in the road. The calling party thought it was hit by a car because it had such poor mobility. Our emergency vet confirmed it just had severe arthritis. No tag, no microchip, lost in the blistering heat. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for two aggressive dogs not letting the calling party leave his house. Trying to catch a dog when there is more than one can be very difficult, especially when you don’t have another officer. The more aggressive one got away while I had the other one cornered. 1/2 is better than 0 though and once separated this guy ended up being very sweet. #animawelfare #dog #animalrescue

@animalwelfareguy Call came in for a bite from a neighbor’s dog that had gotten loose. The owner willingly loaded the dog onto the truck for me so we could do a quarantine at the shelter. He was initially barking/growling at me but after just a few minutes of working with him he started allowing pets. At the shelter he was able to be walked on a leash without any signs of aggression. Some dogs just need more training than others and if you’re not prepared to provide that then maybe you shouldn’t be a pet parent. #animalwelfare #dog #dogtraining

@animalwelfareguy Call came in for a dog hit by a car on the highway. Expectations were low going into it and when I got on scene the dog had no mobility in her lower legs. Highway patrol was standing by with the calling party who had witnessed the dog get hit. I wasn’t able to find a microchip on her and due to the severity of her injuries that likely would have resulted in her euthanizing but the calling party offered to cover her medical expenses and adopt her! @animalwelfareguy Not all dogs can be caught by a single person! This call came in for an injured dog with a very bad limp. He was definitely injured but could still easily run at full speed. None of the usual tricks worked on this guy- treats, baby talk, slow approach without a catch pole. Sometimes we are able to chase a dog into a corner- usually between two houses or into an open backyard. This was not one of those times! @animalwelfareguy Late night call came in for a dog that was possible abandoned. The responding PD officer was kind enough to pick the dog up and meet me at the shelter. I was able to get owner info from the microchip. It’s still uncertain if the dog was actually dumped or if they were coming back for the dog. @animalwelfareguy Call came in for a very aggressive dog chasing the calling party and trying to attack their dog. The calling party also threatened to “deal with the dog themselves” if we couldn’t handle it. We get a lot of calls where people exaggerate urgency to force a faster response time. Fortunately this sweet girl was picked up before it came to conflict and she will likely find a loving home soon!

@animalwelfareguy Call came in for a dog that was reportedly hit by a car and then attacked by another dog. He was very scared when I approached him but he never showed any forward aggression. Later when I unloaded him at the shelter he calmed down significantly and was actually very sweet!
